The 8520/8530 series tend to bring high prices as they are small and light enough to fit in garage shops and move into basements.

Feb 09, 2013· The potential to wreck some very hard to find Atlas mill parts is too great. I can do a lot of hand cranking rather that smashing things up! The nice thing about this unit is it has its own motor so I''m not wearing out the Atlas drive system when vertical milling which in my opinion is a big plus compared to many other units.

They will run you a little more than the 3986 you were looking at but so will almost any other decent small vertical, even the better Chinese ones. Atlas made a small bench horizontal mill called the MF.

The little Clausing vertical mill (made by Atlas Press, naturally) took 2M or 7BS collets, but somebody had the good sense to give different model numbers to machines taking either collet size the 8520 used 2M taper collets, the 8525 used 7BS.

They are far more rigid and i would say that even that little clausing can mill just as much as a bridgy. I get why you would want to put a vertical head on it, and i have a vertical mill, but i use my barker for everything that fits in its work envelope.
Maybe 2000 for one in good condition with a functioning table drive and back gear. I have an MFC, and I like it, but it is a small machine with limited capability. If I were you, before spending the money I would look for a Clausing 8520/30 or a small Rockwell vertical mill.
